The roofs of Faro
Faro has 17,346 buildings in the 2021 Census. 27.3% date from before 1961 and 84.7% were built by 2000. 5.1% need deep repair, against 4.6% nationally, a value above the average.
The CCDR Algarve describes the Algarve popular house with the “platibanda”: a masonry parapet about one metre high along the facade that hides the lower edge of the roof and the eaves. It adapted to roof, terrace or mixed cover. According to the same publication, between the late 19th century and the 1910s-20s the Marselha interlocking tile, more watertight than canudo tile, came into use in urban settings too. The text speaks of the Algarve in general, not only Faro.
We found no council rules on roofs in the historic centre. In 2018 the council reported rehabilitation areas in the Bairro Ribeirinho, Vila Adentro and Mouraria cores, but we did not read their content.
