## The roofs of Faro

Faro has 17,346 buildings in the 2021 Census. 27.3% date from before 1961 and 84.7% were built by 2000. 5.1% need deep repair, against 4.6% nationally, a value above the average.

The CCDR Algarve describes the Algarve popular house with the "platibanda": a masonry parapet about one metre high along the facade that hides the lower edge of the roof and the eaves. It adapted to roof, terrace or mixed cover. According to the same publication, between the late 19th century and the 1910s-20s the Marselha interlocking tile, more watertight than canudo tile, came into use in urban settings too. The text speaks of the Algarve in general, not only Faro.

We found no council rules on roofs in the historic centre. In 2018 the council reported rehabilitation areas in the Bairro Ribeirinho, Vila Adentro and Mouraria cores, but we did not read their content.

## Rain, wind and sun

At the IPMA station in Faro (1991-2020) average rainfall is 455.1 mm a year, concentrated from October to March, and the mean temperature is 18.2 °C (mean maximum 22.3 °C). There are 15.6 days a year with 10 mm or more and 2.2 days with 30 mm or more. The wettest day was 23 December 1992, with 90.0 mm.

There is no frost on average (0.0 days a year; the minimum recorded was -0.3 °C on 5 February 2012). In Faro the roof suffers from sun and from a few strong downpours, which suddenly test joints, flashings and terraces.

## Houses and roofs

- The parapet hides the eaves and the roof edge, according to the CCDR Algarve, and many houses have a terrace or mixed cover. Where the terrace meets the roof, winter water gets in at the flashings.
- The historic centre of Faro has rehabilitation areas in the Bairro Ribeirinho, Vila Adentro and Mouraria cores, according to the council in 2018. We did not find the regulation on tile material or colour.

## Rules and permits

Faro has rehabilitation areas (ARU) for the historic cores Bairro Ribeirinho, Vila Adentro and Mouraria, reported by the council in 2018 with the aim of promoting heritage features and reversing decay. We found no specific roof rules in these areas, nor the municipal building regulation in readable text.

The council has Regulation no. 830/2020 to support the recovery of decayed homes of families with proven economic need. We did not confirm the maximum amount, whether it covers roofs, or whether it is open in 2026. Ask the council.
